From London:

  • Travel from King's Cross to Darlington or Middlesbrough via TransPennine Express or LNER.
  • Transfer at Middlesbrough onto the Esk Valley Line, a charming, hourly service to Whitby; the final stretch passes through heather moorland and costs around ÂŁ50–80 depending on ticket type and travel time
  • Total journey time: 5½ to 6½ hours, fares from about ÂŁ48.70 for advance tickets
  • Whitby station has a spacious car park, step-free access, and is just a 2‑minute walk into town


🚌 By Bus

  • From London:
    • FlixBus services run from Victoria Coach Station to Middlesbrough, then you'll transfer to a local bus or train to Whitby. Typical duration is 7 hours, fares between ÂŁ20–45
  • From York / Leeds:
    • The Yorkshire Coastliner 840 is hailed as one of Britain's most scenic bus routes, running from Leeds through York and Malton to Whitby. Liftoff every 20–60 min, journey time ~ 3Âľ h, with capped fares (~ÂŁ2 per day)
    • From York, bus travel takes ~ 2½ h each way and costs around ÂŁ3, ideal for a day trip

  • From London / Heathrow:
    • Drive via the M1/M18 and A174 or A171, through the North York Moors—approx 4½ hours, ~ 254 miles. Fuel and tolls approx ÂŁ60–90
  • Regional Drives:
    • From Middlesbrough: ~48 miles via the A174.
    • From York: About 1 hour along A169/A171, scenic and direct

    Arrive by train via Middlesbrough, then board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Grosmont for a nostalgic steam-train journey through moorland—a tactile, slow-travel delight
