Travel to Budapest from the UK

As at November 2022

✈️ Getting to Budapest

  • By Air: The easiest way is to fly into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). It's well connected to major UK airports (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh) and most European hubs. Flight times from the UK average 2–3 hours.
  • From the Airport:
    • Taxi or ride-hailing: 30–40 minutes to the city centre.
    • Shuttle bus (100E): Direct to Deák Ferenc Square (downtown).
    • Public transport: Cheaper but requires transfers.
  • 🚗 By Road

  • Budapest is accessible by road if travelling through central Europe, though parking in the city centre can be limited.

  • 🚆 By Train

    • You can reach Budapest via the EuroCity and Railjet trains from Vienna, Prague, or Bratislava—making it a great stop on a multi-city trip.

    🏙️ Why Visit Budapest?

  • Architecture: Stunning mix of Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau.
  • Thermal Baths: Széchenyi, Gellért, and Rudas are world-famous.
  • Danube River: Splits Buda (historic, hilly) and Pest (modern, lively).
  • Landmarks: Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, St. Stephen's Basilica.
  • Culture & Nightlife: Ruin bars, opera, concerts, and vibrant food markets.

  • 🍽️ Food & Drink

  • Try goulash, chimney cake (kürtőskalács), and Hungarian wines like Tokaji.
  • The Great Market Hall is perfect for authentic local flavours.

  • 🕰️ Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (April–June): Mild weather, blooming gardens, fewer crowds.
  • Autumn (September–October): Warm days, wine festivals, golden scenery.
  • Winter (Dec): Magical Christmas markets, thermal baths in the snow, but we went in November and the markets where there and it is stunning.
