Lantern Cottage, Whitby: Beautifully Located, Rich in History, Yet Room for Improvement

We loved Lantern Cottage — it's full of charm, beautifully located in the heart of Whitby, and has a cosy, historic feel. It made for a lovely stay. That said, the cleanliness could definitely have been better — we noticed cobwebs and a fair bit of dust, which took away from the otherwise great experience. A quick deep clean would make this place perfect.

  • Historic charm: A Grade II‑listed fishermen's dwelling dating from the 17th century (around 1635), beautifully restored and tastefully decorated
  • Pet-friendly: Welcomes dogs, making it a great choice for pet owners
  • Central location: Nestled at the foot of Whitby's iconic 199 Steps in a gated yard off historic Church Street, placing you within easy reach of Whitby Harbour, cafés, pubs, shops, and the market
  • The reason why we have rated this property ⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ was due to cleanliness, although the property was tidy and the sheets and towels were clean, there were areas of the property that were not, please see below.

The first three pictures were taken in the kitchen where there were so many cobwebs, damp, mould and needed some repairs, the second three were the bathroom which needed renovation as the floor is rotting and did not feel safe and the plastic plants were so dusty and dirty.

Damaged and dirt in the Kitchen
    Rotten bathroom flooring
    Cobwebs in kitchen window
